A few basic writing tips

Writing is something people often dream of doing. The thing is anyone can do it- often it is a matter of getting the words on a page. Here are a few tips I have found help-

1. Find your routine- Some people work best in the morning, others in the evening. Some people set chapters or words as their targets and others work better in bursts. What I personally find works is to check emails etc before I start writing, break for lunch, write some more etc. It's like studying- once you find a routine stick to it!

2. Work is no excuse- Even if it's a doodled idea on a notepad or something sketched out during a lunch break there is always time for writing. Again this is all part of the routine!

3. Writer first, editor second- With the first draft try not to second guess too much. After you've done the first draft then you can start chopping and changing.

4. An idea that doesn't come off isn't necessarily a failure- Ideas can be cyclical. Therefore don't beat yourself up if every idea doesn't work. I had one idea that morphed from a novel to a musical to a play!

5. Get the right feedback- If you're writing a comic, talk to someone who likes the kind of comic you're trying to write. If you're writing a sitcom, test it on someone who likes the kind of sitcom you're writing. This will help you get more constructive feedback.
